Sculptra® is an FDA/HEALTH CANADA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen—the most common protein in the body that is used to form a framework to support cells and tissue—for results that can last up to two years.
Sculptra® contains Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that promotes collagen Type 1 production when injected into the body. Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers that provide immediate volume, Sculptra® results appear gradually over several months as the body produces more collagen.
As we age, the effects of gravity become more noticeable on our faces, especially as our facial support ligaments weaken, our skin becomes more thin, our facial fat pads shift, and our facial bones are resorbed. Sculptra® can replace age-related volume loss and improve skin quality. Sculptra® is reconstituted with Sterile Water For Injection (SWFI) making the substance rather fluid imparting safety in high risk areas susceptible to vascular occlusion like the temples and piriform aperture. Therefore, it is ideal for global facial volume replacement. The treatment is likened to planting seeds in key areas of the face to form collagen.
Sculptra® stimulates fibroblasts to produce more Collagen Type 1. Fibroblasts reside in the dermis and on top of bone in the periosteum. Dr. Leonardo prefers to inject Sculptra® deep on top of bone to fortify, enhance, and strengthen bony structures. It is thought that fibroblasts on the periosteum communicate with the fibroblasts in the dermis such that there is improvement in facial structure along with skin quality. Results are natural-appearing as facial features are not altered but rather enhanced.
After thorough consultation, topical local anesthetic is applied to the skin and allowed to sit for 20min to achieve adequate numbness. A nerve block is also performed via injection on the skin that is already anesthetized. The product is reconstituted using Sterile Water For Injection (SWFI) and a local anesthetic. These steps make the procedure very comfortable for the patient. The skin of the face is disinfected. The product is injected by direct needle injection to key areas of the face. The injection sites are massaged for 5 minutes prior to discharge.
Keep the injection sites clean. Avoid harsh skincare products, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and excessive sun exposure for 72hrs. These precautions help minimize infection risks and the possibility of prolonged bruising and swelling.
Gently massage the injection sites for 5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days. This helps distribute the product and prevent lumps from forming.
One vial of Sculptra® is recommended per decade of life. 2 vials are administered in one session and repeated every 4-6 weeks. If there are an odd amount of decades, the final session requires only 1 vial. Maintenance is recommended every 10-12 months.
As with any aesthetic medical procedure, ideal candidates are generally healthy, nonsmokers with mild to moderate age-related changes. Consultation is necessary to discuss anticipated outcomes based on your medical history and presentation. Please contact the office to schedule an appointment.
